What a 19-nor compound is

Trenbolone and nandrolone share a structural feature that defines how both behave.

The structure

A 19-nor compound is one missing the carbon at the nineteenth position of the testosterone skeleton. That single absence is what separates this family from testosterone and its derivatives, and it produces the property both compounds are known for: progestogenic activity. Neither trenbolone nor nandrolone behaves like a testosterone with a different ester attached, which is the most common misunderstanding about them.

What progestogenic means

Progestogenic activity means these compounds interact with the progesterone receptor in addition to the androgen receptor. That is a property of the class rather than of any particular product or brand, and it is the reason prolactin is discussed in connection with 19-nors and not with testosterone esters. It is also why the two compounds in this family are more similar to each other than either is to anything outside it.

The family against testosterone

The clearest way to see what the 19-nor structure changes is to put the two compounds beside the one they are usually assumed to resemble.

Common questions

What does 19-nor actually mean?

It refers to the absence of a carbon atom at the nineteenth position of the steroid skeleton. Compounds with that structure are called 19-nortestosterone derivatives, and trenbolone and nandrolone are the two in common supply.

Why are trenbolone and nandrolone grouped together?

Because they share the 19-nor structure and the progestogenic activity that comes with it. That makes them behave more like each other than like testosterone, despite trenbolone and nandrolone being very different in potency.

Is trenbolone just a strong nandrolone?

No. Both are 19-nors and both are progestogenic, but they are distinct compounds. Trenbolone does not aromatise at all and binds the androgen receptor far more strongly; nandrolone aromatises weakly. They are relatives rather than versions of the same thing.

Does this site give dosing information?

No. This is a reference resource covering what these compounds are, how they are presented, what independent testing measured and how they are stored. It does not provide dosing protocols, cycle design or administration schedules.
